Hey there, you beautiful birdie. I hope your week has been lovely. I’ve personally been having a blast 6-weeks post-op reading about the new developments around last week’s PGA-LIV merger announcement. My thoughts and predictions for key stakeholder groups:
PGA Tour
Given the agreement terms, even in their most vague terms as they are now, The PGA Tour appears to have won this fight. We’ll know for sure when the more agreement details are released and dissected by me, every attorney I know, and the rest of the internet for funzies. That is, if this “partnership” doesn’t explode before then. Lady Liberty (US Regulators) are already expressing concern over the PGA’s stronghold on player dynamics, often limiting player’s freedom to participate in other leagues or events. This isn’t a new issue, as many of you know. From jump, I’ve believed LIV would serve as a potential counterbalance to the PGA’s power concentration. It’s always made sense to me to prevent deeper monopoly, further hindering competition and limiting player freedom/accessibility.
LPGA Players
I have yet to read anything about what this will mean for LPGA players, but I plan to investigate this further and share my findings with you all. My “Spidey senses” are telling me that the wage and opportunity gap conversation will be amplified across the golf community, similar to that of the Women’s National Team.
PGA Tour Card Holders + Amateur Players
Players are about to see more bones come their way. Tour life would then improve, and we could see stronger performances from lesser-known athletes. As fans, we are for sure about to be treated to an elevated competition experience and the excitement/unpredictability ahead. The union could potentially enhance accessibility and inclusivity by exposing PGA Tour Enterprises leadership to a more diverse set of perspectives.
Side Bar: I can’t imagine how the players must feel who turned down the astronomical payout potential in the name of loyalty.
The Fans
The partnership may also attract new audiences to the sport globally by offering a range of competition types from casual to more traditional. Not all spectators are attracted to The Masters, more traditional events, just like not everyone is interested in getting covered in beer at the Waste Management Open.
The Overall Winner
Let’s all take a moment to congratulate the greatest winner of all, Brooks Koepka’s wife.
I will continue keeping an eye out as more information unfolds. Feel free to share your thoughts with me on Instagram! Love hearing other perspectives,
