After the wildly well-received post about being a supportive golf mate to your sober besties came out in the fall, I have had a number of people request more content around curbing alcohol use, healthier alternatives, and supporting others in general. With this month being Dry January, we’re focusing on how the golf community can support and celebrate this alcohol-free endeavor over the next few weeks and beyond.
Embracing the Dry January Challenge
Dry January is more than just abstaining from alcohol; it’s a commitment to health, mindfulness, and sometimes, a test of willpower. To anyone who is taking part this year, YOU GO, BOO!
Unfortunately, American culture doesn’t exactly promote sobriety. In the golfing community, where socializing often involves a drink or two, sticking to this commitment can especially be a unique challenge.
Creating Inclusive Social Spaces
Fostering an inclusive environment is key. Since golf friends often become outside of golf friends, it is safe to assume you have golf besties who are participating in Dry January. This means advocating for social events in settings that don’t center solely around alcohol. Clubs and groups can ensure there are enticing non-alcoholic options available at events, showing support for those participating in Dry January/75 Hard/P90X, etc.

Staying Committed to Personal Goals
Personal resolve is becoming more and more of a focus of mine. Keeping in mind the reasons for this choice – be it health, a personal challenge, or a lifestyle change – can help maintain focus and determination, both on and off the course. I just think we don’t talk about where we are at in this realm because it is often assumed a drinking problem must have been caused.
Supporting Fellow Golfers
For those not participating, there’s still a vital role to play. Show support by respecting the choices of others, avoiding peer pressure, and encouraging participation in alternative activities. This approach helps build a supportive and diverse golfing community and is great practice for when golf picks back up and claws seem to taste better in the sun.
GHIN & (pla)Tonic is all about embracing the full spectrum of the golf lifestyle with your Golf Besties. This includes supporting choices like Dry January. It’s about recognizing that our community is diverse and that our choices, whether on the green or at the bar, are personal and worthy of respect.
So, cheers to all those taking on Dry January – we’re with you every step of the way, celebrating the victories, big and small!
