Reflection exercise just for funzies!
As the final day of PGA Championship unfolds today, I believe it’s the perfect time to reflect on the parallels between the world of golf and our own lives. Just as a round of golf unfolds, so does life, business, and leadership – full of challenges, surprises, and opportunities for growth. I’ve put together an exercise for anyone who wants to use today (or any day) to reflect. Common situations that may arise during a round of golf have been paired with actions for self-exploration. I’ve also included ideas for how to better address each of the common situations for yourself and in aiding others. Click on the “+” to expand each area:
Getting off on the wrong foot in anything used to have a fun little way of derailing me entirely. I still have to remind myself every single round that initial setbacks (a big ol’ snowman of an 8 on the first hole, for example) are not the end-all. The true spirit of a golfer is revealed not when they are ahead, but when they need to catch up.
Reflection Prompt
Recall a time when you had a rough start in a golf round. How did you manage to overcome it and shift your mindset? Reflect on the specific strategies or techniques you employed to regain your focus and improve your performance. What valuable lessons did you learn from that experience about resilience and the importance of staying positive in the face of adversity?
Pressure is an integral part of the golfing world. I am certain pressure is the only reason I can play so much better in competition, rather than in a practice round. The ability to handle this pressure can make the difference between an ordinary player and a champion in any field. The key I have been working to hone lies not in evading the pressure, but in embracing it and using it to fuel your performance.
Reflection Prompt
Think of a situation in golf or life where you felt immense pressure. How did you handle that pressure and maintain your composure? Reflect on the mental strategies or techniques you utilized to channel the pressure into a positive performance. What insights did you gain about yourself and your ability to thrive under pressure?
Golf is a game of decisions. Choosing the right club, deciding the strategy, adjusting the swing – all these decisions shape the course of the game. Likewise, in life and business, our decisions can dictate the path to success or failure.
Reflection Prompt
Reflect on a significant decision you had to make during a golf round. Describe the factors you considered and the process you went through to arrive at your decision. What were the outcomes of that decision, and how did it impact your overall performance? What lessons did you learn about decision-making, trust in your abilities, and taking calculated risks?
Just as weather changes can impact a game of golf, life too is filled with unforeseen changes. The ability to adapt, to recalibrate our strategies, and to stay resilient amid these changes often marks the difference between success and failure.
Reflection Prompt
Recall a situation where you faced unexpected changes during a golf round, such as sudden weather shifts or course conditions. How did you adapt to these changes and adjust your game plan? Reflect on the mindset and strategies you employed to stay resilient and maintain focus despite the unexpected circumstances. How did this experience change your perspective on handling unforeseen changes in other aspects of life?
Every misjudged swing or missed putt carries a lesson. Golfers know that to improve their game, they need to analyze their mistakes, learn from them, and ensure they do not repeat them. Similarly, in life, it’s our mistakes that often teach us the most valuable lessons.
Reflection Prompt
Think about a specific mistake or error you made during a golf round. Reflect on how you analyzed that mistake, identified the root causes, and learned from it. How did that mistake influence your subsequent decisions and actions? What adjustments did you make to improve your skills and prevent similar mistakes in the future? How has this experience shaped your approach to self-reflection and continuous learning?
In golf, every win is a testament to hard work, strategy, and perseverance. These victories should be celebrated – they provide motivation for the next round and beyond. Similarly, in life, it’s essential to take time to celebrate our achievements.
Reflection Prompt
Reflect on a recent accomplishment or success in your golf game. How did you celebrate and acknowledge your achievement? Explore the emotions and sense of fulfillment that accompanied your success. How did this victory motivate and inspire you to set new goals and strive for further improvement? Reflect on the importance of celebrating milestones and recognizing your progress along the journey.
In golf, consistent performance across rounds can build a momentum that can propel a player towards victory. Likewise, in life and business, maintaining momentum can often be the key to long-term success and growth. As someone with real ADHD, recovering after losing momentum has been a debilitating area, one I attempt to grow within often!
Reflection Prompt
Consider a period in your golfing journey when you experienced consistent performance and built momentum. Reflect on the factors that contributed to your sustained success, such as practice routines, mental preparation, or adjustments in your approach. How did maintaining momentum positively impact your overall growth and development as a golfer? What challenges did you face, and how did you overcome them to keep the momentum going?
Golf is a journey, filled with highs and lows, victories and losses. The real joy lies not just in winning but in the journey itself, in the learnings we gather along the way, and the person we become.

Explore the lessons and growth you have experienced through the challenges you faced. How have these experiences shaped your character, resilience, and perspective on both success and failure?
